Getting Started with Bleeped

Everything you need to go from signing up to listening to your first filtered book, with honest expectations at every step. Five minutes to read, and your first book will thank you.

The one thing to know before you start

Before a book can play filtered, it needs to be bleeped. You start that step by tapping the "Bleep This Book" button on any book in your library, and the bleeping process takes some time.

Set your expectations: bleeping a book is not instant. Depending on the length of the book, it can take a few hours. You only do it once per book, and you do not need to keep the app open while it works. The only way a book is ready instantly is if it is a pre-filtered Bleeped Collection title purchased through AudiobooksNow. And once any book is bleeped, changing your filters is instant, forever.

Path 1 · Buy a book inside the app

  1. 1Create your account. Download Bleeped on the App Store or sign up here. Your free trial starts now, so it is worth starting your first book the same day.
  2. 2Check the Bleeped Collection first. These titles are already bleeped, so after you purchase one through AudiobooksNow there is no processing wait. Just set your filters and press play.
  3. 3Search for your book. Bleeped has a built-in AudiobooksNow integration, so you can find and purchase audiobooks with one tap without leaving the app. Note that AudiobooksNow does not carry every title, so if your book is not there, use Path 2 below.
  4. 4Open your book and tap "Bleep This Book." This is the step people miss. Your book will show a processing status while it is being bleeped. This can take a few hours, and you can close the app and go live your life, we keep working.
  5. 5Set your filters. When processing finishes, choose what gets filtered: profanity, sexual content, violence, slurs, and more. Filter changes apply instantly and you can adjust them any time, even mid-chapter.
  6. 6Press play. Same narrator, same story, cleaner listen.

Path 2 · Bring a book you already own

  1. 1Buy your audiobook from a platform that lets you download the files you own. For example, stores like Libro.fm sell audiobooks as downloadable files, and those work great with Bleeped. If your platform does not offer file downloads of your books, that book cannot be uploaded yet, and we are actively working on new official integrations to cover more platforms.
  2. 2Download the audio files. MP3 and M4B files work best. Downloading on a computer is usually easiest, then upload at bleepedapp.com/app. You can also upload straight from your phone.
  3. 3Upload to Bleeped. In the app, go to your Library and choose upload, or drag your files into the web app at bleepedapp.com/app. Keep the page open until the upload finishes, a big book can take a few minutes.
  4. 4Open your book and tap "Bleep This Book." Same as Path 1: your book gets bleeped, which can take a few hours depending on its length. You only do this once.
  5. 5Set your filters and press play. Instant filter changes, any time, forever.

While your book is processing

Your book's cover shows its status while it is being bleeped. You do not need to keep the app open, and nothing is lost if you close it. A good first-day plan: start your own book bleeping right after you sign up, then enjoy a Bleeped Collection title while it works. That way your trial time goes to actual listening.
